Technical and architectural lead on greenfield systems for direct-to-consumer sales.

Volvo Cars was moving into direct-to-consumer sales and a subscription model. A number of greenfield projects came out of that, and from December 2021 we took the technical and architectural lead across them.

What got built was a set of internal applications carrying product, pricing, tax and discount information.

Nothing was in place yet. The data structures, the APIs, the reusable front-end frameworks and the applications sitting on top of all of it were part of the same brief, which is a different job from adding to something that already runs.

Teams were already there around the work, and upskilling them was part of the brief alongside the building.

We designed the data structures and the APIs, built the reusable front-end frameworks, and built the applications themselves.

Alongside that we introduced new practices and processes to the existing teams.

Our record names the programme, the role and the technology. It does not name the individual applications, put a count on them beyond several, or say which of them went live.

The technology list carries .NET Core next to Node and React, and Azure next to SQL Server, without saying what each one held up. We have left that unexplained rather than invent a reason for it.

There is no figure for this engagement, and nothing in the record describes how the direct-to-consumer programme fared after April 2022. This page therefore claims neither.
