Re-platforming Sky Casino while it stayed open.

Millionsof customers, live throughout
The situation

Sky Casino is one of the UK's largest online casino products, serving a customer base in the millions. Its Next.js implementation had drifted: standards had loosened, Node and PHP versions had fallen behind, and the delivery pipeline had become the slowest part of shipping anything.

The work was a re-platform of the front end, and a general bringing-up-to-date of software that a very large number of people were using every day.

The constraint

Regulated gambling, at scale, with real money moving through it. There is no maintenance window on a product like this, and no version of the work that involves taking it down. The estate had to be modernised underneath live traffic, with the regulator's requirements holding the whole time.

What we did

Dave re-platformed the Sky Casino Next.js implementation and enforced stricter standards across the codebase, so the improvements survived the engagement rather than decaying after it.

Node and PHP versions were upgraded, and a substantial amount of DevOps work went into Docker and Jenkins, because on a platform this size the pipeline is the constraint. Terraform, Jest and Cypress carried the safety net that made shipping into production routine rather than an event.

The outcome

A modernised front end on current runtimes, stricter standards holding in the codebase, and a delivery pipeline that no longer sets the pace, on a product serving millions of customers that stayed live throughout.
